Pacifica network will broadcast D.C. peace rally

On Saturday, January 18, 2003 Pacifica Radio Network will air five hours of the INTERNATIONAL A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition's anti-war rally on the Washington, D.C. Mall. The broadcast begins at 11:00am Eastern Time and runs through 4:00pm eastern time.

The live program will bring to the audience the scheduled speakers from the stage and interview guests, who will join host Verna Avery Brown, anchor of Peace Watch and the Pacifica's Washington Bureau Chief. The interview guest list will include former Attorney General Ramsey Clark, who led the Justice Department during the Vietnam conflict. Mr. Clark will be asked to compare his Justice Department to that of Attorney General John Ashcroft. Also joining the Pacifica coverage will be Rep. Charles Rangel, who recently called for the re-instatement of the military draft. Mr. Rangel, a decorated Korea War veteran, will also address the growing tensions with Korea.

Verna Avery Brown is the host of the network's nightly news magazine, PEACE WATCH. The hour long program is dedicated to the proliferation of peaceS.promoting peace, preserving peace and monitoring those who would seek to destroy the peace. The entire 60 minutes is devoted to bringing forth the voices of anti-war activists, politicians, musicians, spiritual leaders, poets, artists, veterans, nuns, teenagers, grandmothers and just ordinary citizens who oppose the war agenda. Recent guests include former U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Edward Peck, former U.S. Marine Kenneth Nichols, poet Sonya Sanchez, Former United Nations Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter and author Noam Chomsky.

The International A.N.S.W.E.R. (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition is building on the momentum of the October 26 anti-war protests, the biggest opposition to conflict since the Vietnam War. A.N.S.W.E.R. is also sponsoring mass rallies against the war in San Francisco and other cities worldwide also on Saturday, January 18. The event is pegged to overlap the spirit of peace and non-violence embodied in the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Confirmed speakers for the rally include former Attorney General Ramsey Clark, former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, Damu Smith (Black Voices for Peace), actors Jessica Lange and Mike Farrell, and Ron Kovic (author, BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY).

Laura Flanders, host of Working Assets Radio, daily on KALW 91.7 in San Francisco and WBAI General Manager Don Rojas will join Verna Avery Brown at the anchor desk for the INTERNATIONAL A.N.S.W.E.R. Coalition is rally on the Washington, D.C. Mall, Saturday, January 18, 2003. The Pacifica Radio Network will be airing five hours of the rally from 11:00am Eastern Time till 4:00pm eastern time. The program will broadcast the events from the stage as well as on-set interviews.

At the top and bottom of each hour a network ID will be played.
