"Pacifica national board" to meet in NYC! |
From: Leslie Cagan [dissident national board member] Date: Sun, 03 Jun 2001 08:42:06 -0400 Subject: [WBAIcoord] Pacifica Board meeting set! At 11:50 pm last night I received a fax from the Pacifica Foundation office that said: Special Notice of Meeting Pacifica Board of Directors Notice is hereby given that the governing Board of Directors of the Pacifica Foundation will nominate members for election to the Board at their meeting in New York City on July 1, 2001. Location information will respectfully be sent out in a second Notice of Meeting 7 days prior to the meeting and posted on the Pacifica website at that time.
Mr. David G. Acosta

MEANWHILE, ACTIVISTS SEND 280,000+ EMAILS DEMANDING
HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP! Over the weekend, Pacifica's anti-community radio chair, David Acosta, suddenly notified national board members of a special meeting in New York (at a yet undisclosed site) on July 1, "to nominate members for election to the board." Since the Mary Frances Berry-installed majority now has nine votes on the board, to five for free speech-community radio activists, they are in a position to further increase their majority with more people totally unrepresentative of Pacifica's traditions and principles. YOU CAN HELP STOP this potential board-packing plan, by joining activists who have sent more than a quarter of a million letters in the last day-and-a-half demanding the resignation of vice- chair Ken Ford from the national governing board. The e-mail campaign is being waged through a Berkeley-based activist Web site, http://www.ProgressivePortal.org/letters/ pacifica/, in conjunction with the New York-based Pacifica Campaign founded by former Democracy Now! co-host Juan Gonzalez. The letters are being sent to about six-hundred chapter officials in the National Association of Home Builders, the organization where Ford works. (Among other things, the industry-based NAHB has opposed numerous environmental regulations, as well as accomodations for the disabled.) The letters call on the members to demand Ford's resignation from the Pacifica board, claiming Ford is helping to destroy Pacifica. Under Ford's leadership, the activists claim, dozens of progressive broadcasters have been censored, fired, or banned from Pacifica stations, the Pacifica Network News has been censored and decimated, and Democracy Now! has been constantly censored and hampered. A similar campaign targeting the employer of former Pacifica board member Micheal Palmer preceded Palmer's recent resignation from the board. Palmer is the author of a memorandum proposing to "reprogram" Pacifica flagship stations KPFA in Berkeley and WBAI in New York, and advocating selling one or both stations. The manager of Progressive Portal, Steve Freedkin, said he is "astounded and gratified" at the huge response. More than 450 people have each sent a letter to the 600 homebuilders. Freedkin says the timing of the letter campaign is important because the homebuilders are meeting in Washington for a national conference THIS WEEK. He says he hopes activists will send up to a million total messages over the coming week by visiting http://www.ProgressivePortal.org/letters/pacifica/. Ford is currently vice chair of the board. Activists charge he is serving illegally because under the organization's by-laws his term of office has expired. PLEASE LOG ON TO
