PROGRAM DIRECTOR

Established in 1949, KPFA-FM was the first listener supported radio station
in the United States. Located in Berkeley, California, it is the flagship
station of the Pacifica network, which is a mission-driven organization
dedicated to free speech, peace and social justice, and cross-cultural
understanding. Broadcasting at 59,000 watts, KPFA serves much of Northern
and Central California with an eclectic range of cultural, music, news and
public affairs programming. The program schedule is diverse and includes
news and public affairs, music and arts programming. KPFA is seeking a
Program Director who is serious about innovative, quality programming
accomplished in a collaborative decision-making environment.
Job Description/Responsibilities
The Program Director, with a Programming Council consisting of paid and
unpaid staff, and representatives from the listening community, is
responsible for:
Overall supervision and coordination of station programming, including a
paid programming staff of 20 and a volunteer programming staff of over 100;
Working in tandem with administration, training, development and
operations departments;
Supervision of all programming staff and coordination of all activities
related to programming, including ongoing program evaluation;
Supervision of on-air fundraising programming in conjunction with the
Development Department;
Participation in planning goals and budgets, and analyzing audience and
fund-raising data, including Audience Research.
Requirements
Bachelor's Degree or commensurate experience in related field, plus 3-5
years of supervisory/management experience in radio or related media field
Commitment to helping create a truly diverse workplace is absolutely
essential
Excellent supervisory skills and a proven ability to work with paid and
volunteer staff are necessary
Strong interpersonal and communications skills, ability to lead and
motivate people, and the ability to work well in a multi-cultural
environment are essential
Should be a radio visionary with a well-developed sense of quality
community-based radio programmin.
Salary
This is a full-time management position. Annual salary DOE. Excellent
benefits: medical, dental, 403 (b), and generous vacation and holidays
benefit.
