Subject: Bomb Threat at KPFA

I just talked to Sherry Gendleman (KPFA LAB Chair) & Barbara Lubin (Friends of Free Speech Radio. Barbara is at the station. Someone called in a bomb threat to the KPFA newsroom -- saying they had 20 minutes to get out before the bomb went off -- so the police evacuated the station.... thus the dead air. Everyone is OK.

Wed., October 24, 2001 --

KPFA Radio was off the air for less than an hour this evening after the station was evacuated in the wake of a bomb threat phoned in at approximately 5:30 p.m. PT.

After police searched the building, KPFA continued broadcast of Dennis Bernstein's Flashpoints program, followed by the KPFA evening news, approximately 50 minutes behind schedule.

Bernstein told me that Pacifica has paid approximately half of the outstanding electric bill for the station, after Pacific Gas and Electric threatened to turn off power to the station's transmitter because of the unpaid bills.
