Message from iPNB secretary to CF
regarding the Boycott
1-23-02

Weds., 1-23-02

Although most of the conditions set forth by the Concerned Friends of WBAI for lifting the boycott of Pacifica have been met here and NYC, the situations in Los Angeles, D.C., and Houston are far from resolved. There is some confusion and discussion as to whether the boycott should maybe be lifted in NYC (there has already been fundraising in Berkeley) but not in the other areas. There is also concern about the money going to pay off the huge debt to the former PNB hijackers law and pr firms instead of going to the station.

Last night (Tues.) the WBAI LAB voted to support lifting the boycott.[see resolution]

Subject: Request to end the boycott

Dear Concerned Friends of WBAI --

This is a request that you vote to lift the boycott at WBAI now.

The majority of new interim board of directors is committed to taking action on each of the issues you have raised, and a good deal more, and has already taken action of several of those items.

We currently have a team of accountants working full time for 2 weeks under a grant to get us the financial information we need to come up with a plan for survival. Our board chair has already publicly committed to making that financial report public -- and it is due at the end of January.

But we already know that in order to rebuild this precious national resource -- and all five Pacifica stations -- we must deal with a financial crisis of unprecedented proportions. WBAI and the Pacifica network are media resources worth saving ... that is what we have all fought for the past several years. We have succeeded in gaining the opportunity to restore and rebuild ... but we could fail in that opportunity if we do not have the financial resources necessary to do it.

So, please be assured that the majority of interim board of directors is committed to restoring and rebuilding free speech radio at Pacifica ... with your help. And I believe that you can help very much by ending the boycott at this time.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.
